The movement of people to, from, and around Africa increasingly has global
implications. The continent captured the world's attention at the turn of the
millennium, only to be overshadowed by the September 11 attacks and subsequent
wars. Today, concerns about security, development, and humanitarian crises,
such as the one taking place in Sudan's Darfur region, are intersecting to spark
new interest in African migration.
This Special Issue on Africa aims to shed light on some key aspects of that
migration, whether they be brain drain, labor and entrepreneurs in motion,
feminization of migrant flows, the difficulties of acquiring solid African
data, or current humanitarian dilemmas from Darfur to Liberia. In this issue:
- Aderanti Adepoju of the Human Resources Development Centre in Lagos
examines the changing
configurations of migration in Africa.
- Beverlee Bruce of the Social Science Research Council takes a
field-based look at the challenges of
post-conflict
reconstruction in Liberia.
- Hania Zlotnik of the UN Population Division provides a Data Insight
on international
migration in Africa.
- MPI Associate Policy Analyst Erin Patrick outlines the refugee crisis
in and around Sudan's Darfur region.
- MPI Senior Demographer Elizabeth Grieco maps out several key features
of the population of
African foreign born
in the United States.
- Comparative migration
statistics for regions and countries in Africa
from newly released UN data.
You'll also find a trio of new Country Profiles:
- Kate Lefko-Everett of the Southern Africa Migration Project takes a
detailed look at
Botswana's changing migration patterns.
- Sally E. Findley of Columbia University examines migration, the
option chosen by many people from
Mali in times of economic hardship.
- Jim Cobbe of Florida State University explains how
Lesotho's ties to
South Africa translate into migration.
And as always, we include our regular features such as this month's
Policy Beat, in which MPI's Betsy Cooper looks at the Department of Homeland
Security's latest strategies for US borders.
